North River Prevention Partners’ Mikeal Steele Memorial Scholarship

Mikeal Steele was only 17 years old when he was killed by a drunk driver on October 25, 2020.
He was beloved by his family, his friends, and his community. Mikeal was a great student and a great athlete, but more than that, he was a great son, brother, friend, and mentor.
Always ready with a helping hand, he could be counted on for an encouraging word and was looked up to by the younger athletes he mentored.
His tragic death was 100% preventable.
It is our intention to honor graduating North River Youth Coalition (NRYC) members who have served for at least two years with a Mikeal Steele Memorial Scholarship in recognition of the qualities they share with Mikeal.
Yes, they have chosen to make healthy choices by avoiding alcohol and other drugs, but like Mikeal, they are helpers, mentors, and all-around great people.
They are role models for younger teens, they have given back to their community, and they advocate for themselves and their peers. They deserve to be celebrated for these qualities and we will do just that at this year’s Mocktails and Merriment event.
